I liked this scene a lot because talk of reliving the past works really well in the context of the frame narrative. Like Gatsby is reimagining a relationship with Daisy he never had, Nick is looking back at the 20s through alcohol and nostalgia blurred rose colored glasses. From his psychiatrist’s, he watches his youth in the same twisted, voyeuristic way he watched Gatsby and Daisy. The parties and the car chases are so lavish and outlandish because Nick can’t perfectly repeat the past in his narration. He is no longer there, and arguably never was (observing everything as only a naive alcoholic bystander). Only exaggerated, fragmented memories remain and this is the visual yarn Luhrmann delivers.

Maybe if the pacing of the film wasn’t awful and the modernistic elements didn’t seem so half-assed and incongruent then these neat narrative subtleties wouldn’t have been lost in the eccentricity of the whole thing. Or maybe I’m full of shit. Either way Jordan was hawwwt.
